Ruth Oshikanlu received a Commendation at the inaugural International Midwifery Expo Awards on the 12th November 2019. Ruth was recognised for the work she does to promote inclusion.
Ruth is passionate about reducing health inequalities and drawn to working with groups of women that feel marginalised. She currently supports women who have had assisted conception or previous pregnancy loss. Previous roles include: working as a HIV specialist midwife, a Family Nurse on The Department of Health’s Family Nurse Partnership programme. Ruth has been involved in many projects that have helped reduce inequalities and supported vulnerable women and children to achieve their potential.
Ruth was involved in developing the current Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) pathway for The Department of Health/Public Health England for midwives, health visitors and school nurses. She is a member of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) BME Strategic Advisory Group and use this role to influence policy and raise professional standards.
Ruth is passionate about perinatal mental health and is involved in speaking to various African faith groups about mental health and infertility to reduce stigma and promote inclusion. Once a year, she travels to West African countries to share expertise with nurses and midwives in perinatal mental health.
Ruth said: “I am delighted to be commended for doing what I love! Enabling women to their enjoy pregnancy and grow and raise happy babies. My mission continues: To be With Woman, With Child!”
